Chalkboard Frame

Finally I have completed my project!  Drumroll please….  It is a chalkboard frame!  I have seen them on the internet and have been wanting one.  So I enlisted the help of my husband and ran to Hobby Lobby to buy a gold frame.  The frames can get pricey!  Even with my 40% coupon it was $30, but I really, really wanted one and I am worth it.  Ha!

Then me and the hubby, ran (really drove, but ran sounds so much better) to Lowe’s and found 1/8″ birch plywood to use as the insert for the frame.  It is a very smooth plywood and comes in large sheet.  It is perfect to use for this!  While I was in Lowe’s I bought Valspar‘s Chalkboard paint in black.

My husband had to use his jigsaw, with a fine tooth blade, to cut the plywood to fit the frame.  Try to get the plywood to fit as snug as possible in the frame so when you glue it, it won’t slide around in the frame.

I used a small foam roller to paint the chalkboard.  It goes on very smooth, but does require two coats of chalkboard paint.  So in between coats I used Glad Press and Seal to cover my paint and roller to keep it moist.  Then I forgot about my project….  For days!!!  Three days later, my foam paint roller and chalkboard paint were still moist!  Crazy!!

Once the final coat of chalkboard paint was dry, I used Gorrilla Glue to attach the chalkboard to the frame.  When reading the directions, it said that the Gorrilla Glue could expand up to 3 times.  Puh-lease!  I glued, and let me tell you, it does expand and does not come off unless you chisel it off.  So take it from me, only use a fine line of glue to attach the chalkboard to the frame or you will be chiseling it off!

So here it is.  My chalkboard frame!  And yes, I am decorating for Christmas already.  It is my favorite time of year and it seems that every year, I decorate earlier and earlier!

Hope you like it as much as I do!

Is it grey or gray?

I know I was going to post on a cool project that I have been working on, but as is life, I still have not finished it.  Whomp, whomp, whomp.  But, I do have a fantastic furniture redo to share with before and after pictures!  This dresser was a Craigslist find.  Not bad, but definitely just eh….

Image

The gentleman who sold it to me, was very proud of this dresser.  He said he polished it with Old English to keep it purty?!  Oh if he only knew what I was going to do it!  So I got it home and stripped the top with Motsenbocker’s Lift Off.

Image

This product worked like a charm.  I just poured it on the top and smeared it around with a chip brush.  Let it sit for around 10-15 mins. and then used a scraper to remove the Old English?!  It took a few times of doing it for all of it to come off, but I conquered!

Once I stripped the top and waited 24 hrs., per directions on the stripping agent, I applied Minwax Dark Walnut Stain.  Next I painted the dresser with gray milk paint.  It took two coats to achieve the coverage I wanted, but the paint dries so quickly that by the time I completed the dresser with one coat I could start all over again painting the second.  To highlight the drawers I used a small paint brush to paint the grooves with white milk paint.  Last, I finished it off with Fiddes & Sons wax.

And….

It turned out wonderful.  {sigh}  The icing on the cake, or should I say dresser, is the clear knobs.  I really do adore it.  So here are a few more pictures to show you how beautiful it is.

And yes, those are real wood casters!

So I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did!  Till next time…

Maybe my next post will be about that fun little project that I have been working on!

Moving is a lot of work!

Today was a day that started early with tons to do! Ugh. I just wanted to lay around and have a day of peace, but that wasn’t gonna happen. Realtors were here at 9 a.m. to view the house and tell me what I needed to do to make it “market ready.” So the house will officially be on the market tomorrow. After meeting with the realtors, it is sad to realize that the house that you have spent so much time and effort making your own, isn’t worth as much as you thought. Total bummer. It has to be sold so that I can customize another house to my liking all over again! I really like the challenge and am always up for a little DIY project :)

To prepare for the house getting market ready, I have been painting rooms like a mad woman. Prior to painting I had done a little research to see what products would make my life easier in the process. After using FrogTape and Purdy paintbrushes, I am sold! They are totally awesome and definitely worth the few extra pennies to make your life just a little easier. The only thing better would be if there was someone else doing the work for you!

My next post will actually be a fun little project that I have seen all over the internet. It has something to do with a picture frame. Don’t let the suspense get the best of you!

Till next time!

Where did October go?!

Here in South Texas, the temperatures are finally cooling down and the weather is very pleasant. So time to do a little furniture makeover! Wahoo! So here is my latest and greatest redo.

I found a beautiful French Provincial buffet on Craigslist and when I saw it, I just knew I had to have it! After a little repair to the bottom, she was as good as new and ready for a new outfit. For this piece, I decided to try a different paint product that I have never used before. After reading Miss Mustard Seed’s blog, I have wanted to give milk paint a whirl. I don’t know if I will EVER go back to using latex paints to paint furniture with again! It is that good! The consistency at first is watery, but once you get over that, it is smooth sailing. Love, love, love it!

Without further adieu, here she is!

I am in love! Of all people, my husband does not want me to sell this piece, but sadly she must go. We just found out that we are moving to Dallas. So it is time to clean and declutter. I am sure she will find a good home!

A beginning

Hello everyone!  My name is Megan and I am new to the blogging world.  After reading several other blogs and gaining confidence in my abilities to do it, I have decided to join the cyber world and create my own blog.  So first a little about myself.  I, first and foremost, am a lover of the Lord, a wife to an amazing husband, a mother to 4 beautiful children and last, but not least, a NICU nurse.  (There are many more hats I wear, but you don’t have all day!  These are just the most important.)  My blog is going to focus on my furniture finds, refurbishing furniture, DIY design and my love of decorating my own home.

I came up with the name Magpie’s ‘N More from my daughters name Maggie.  A Magpie is actually a bird, but my business name was not inspired by that.  I hope that you will decided to follow my blog, find inspiration and a few laughs along the way!

My email address is: magpiesnmore@yahoo.com.  Hope to hear from you soon!
